A SHIFTING CENTRE OF BALANCE
26.04.2012 - 03.05.2012 Gallery North Project Space
Deborah Bower. Matt Foster. Yvette Hawkins. Jonathan Lynch. Iris Piriest. Charlie Snow.
Showcasing works from AA2A artists and 3rd Year Fine Art students.
A shifting centre of balance brings together the work of six artists as part of the Artists Access to Art Colleges Programme (AA2A). This programme supports practicing visual artists and designers with the opportunity to undertake a period of research and provide time and space in which to initiate or realise existing work. The exhibition features work by the 4 selected artists of the scheme; Deborah Bower, Yvette Hawkins, Jonathan Lynch and Iris Priest. In addition, the programme also recognises the importance of
the professional development of the student body and over the past 7 months the four artists have worked with a number of students providing workshops, artists talks and also creating artist/student collaborative opportunities. This exhibition includes the work of the AA2A student reps currently studying on the BA Honours Fine Art programme; Matt Foster and Charlie Snow.
The AA2A project provides placements for visual artists and designer makers in Higher and Further Education institutions across England.
Participants have had the opportunity to undertake a period of research or realise a project, using workshops and supporting facilities in participating fine art and design
departments.
Visit: http://aa2a.biz/pg/profile/northumbria for information on the artists and http://www.aa2a.org/ for more information on the AA2A programme.
Deborah Bower is an artist filmmaker who is extending filmmaking into print – looking at the similarities between the techniques of film and print making. As part of this
exploration she has taken imagery from a 16mm film made from collaged lighting gels and created screen prints referencing them. Her printing process purposefully mirrors and magnifies the irregularities inherent in her construction of these small and intricate film strips.
Matt Foster uses words and statements from the world around him and deliberately repeats them back to the viewer. It is his hope that said context will allow the viewer a
fresh perspective on how the people that inhabit the world around them think; whether it is about the subject themselves, that which is around them, or not at all. It is his intention to remind the viewer that what was always mundane is still mundane, and that which is presented as ordinary is not always so.
Yvette Hawkins makes tactile, engaging and textural sculptures and installations that explore suggestion and secrecy. Her work is concerned with the physical acts of
looking, reading and listening encouraging viewers to consciously be aware of their surroundings, controlling and manipulating the way things can be seen, read and heard.
At the heart of Jonathan Lynch's practice lies something which isnt there. The visual manifestations of this thought process render emotionally charged, lonely portraits of places and imaginations, redolent of anonymity and solitude. These interior narratives, deep in meditation, often echo the proportions of the spaces within which they are seen, adorning the solace of empty gallery walls, reinforcing and elaborating the act of looking.
At the core of Iris Priest's practice is a concern with the fallibility and ephemerality of entrenched human ideas and ideologies. Her work is an enquiry into the origins of knowledge (epistemology) and how the standardisation and systematisation of received wisdom throughout history conditions humanities relative yet shifting perception of the universe. www.irispriest.co.uk
Charlie Snow A giant patchwork quilt in which each thread draws a night vision; the tales of our unconscious are woven within each patch. This on-going project utilises several methods of participation; from serving specific foods types and applying psychological methods onto participants, to postal patchwork kits, each allowing Snow to provoke dreams in participants which then are translated into a contribution for her collaborative quilt.

TeRMS AND CONDITIONS APPLY
In todayʼs contemporary consumer society advertising is our zeitgeist, a language with multiple translations which both distorts and reflects modern culture. Through well considered appropriation a distanced reading is achieved,
allowing reconsideration of what is presented to us. Benefiting from past endeavours by the Dadaists, Futurists and Pop arts, we turn our gaze to a consumerist society, saturated with advertising. We hijack mass culture, using
appropriation as, ʻa deconstructive device,ʼ criticisms regarding originality are redundant - originality is found in the new voice which interrogates an omnipresent mass media. Advertising is the simulacrum of our society, the works in this exhibition each use détourned elements to play upon the double nature of advertising, turning meaning on its
head.
The work in *Terms and Conditions Apply is as heterogeneous as the advertising it disputes. Taking a variety of critical slants which are often humorous, using satire and parody, with often political undertones, the mechanics of
advertising are deconstructed. Some works look at specific elements of advertising, from the use of flowers in magazine adverts, whilst at the other end of the scale other works take on the over abundance of information we are constantly bombarded with in city life. Advertising reveals a great deal about society, but what does it mean to the individual, or perhaps, what does it mean to those who actively advertise for their living? By salvaging existing media we aim to expose cultural truths about what is really being sold to the consumer. Dismantling the flashy
dynamics of advertising, deconstructing its false promises, and sifting through what is left.

SCENE OF THE UNSEEN
"In those places unseen, there are scenes of places in between. They are timeless. For eternity they pass through, waiting to be redeemed. It is the unseen territories of the computer screen, within the landscape, of a presence or dream.
We are situated in a space in which we must either recognise ourselves or lose ourselves."

SPACE INVADERS: BEWARE THE INVASION
Never realised only imagined, only guessed at, the constantly out of reach.
The attempt to achieve a complete harmony, perfection, an equilibrium.
An awareness the self, of our contradictions, of our limitations.
To reach the unattainable, another way of being, far removed from the social and political conditions of the present.
“We need the most powerful telescope, that of polished utopian consciousness, in order to penetrate precisely the nearest nearness.”
(Ernst Bloch, The Principle of Hope, 1954-59)

Emily White
"A pair corresponds to identical items that are grouped together, from a pair of gloves to a pair of twins, a shared identity that assembles as one, obscuring the boundaries of individual existence. Through the context of the duo, I evoke a conversation of self-identity, identifying a realisation of separation."
Jill Wann
"Colour and energy caught in the act of becoming an alternative otherness. Chance organic formations occurring within the materiality may be read as metaphors for life."
Lauren Waite
"Creation through the manipulation of elements: the use of formalism as a tool in order to create or suggest illusion from imagery sourced from my subconscious."
James Routledge
"By constructing pathways which lead through the surface of the painting I control your journey through the landscape, using light as a means of drawing your attention to the presence of the line and therefore how the presence of a line can define a space."
My paintings are not designed to simulate reality; the purpose is not to retrace the landscape but to reinvent it."
Joanna Hutton
"The deterioration is at first unnoticeable but then the realisation of the gravity and weight of the situation overwhelms us."

Mirror, Mirror...
Squires Foyer
A site-specific installation located for a period in Squires foyer at Northumbra University by Fine Art MA student, Sarah Riseborough.
'Mirror, Mirror...' Consists of digital photographs, salt, ink, tables and vitrine.
Visit: http://sarahriseborough.tumblr.com/ for more information on Sarah's practice.
Riseborough explores a range of different aspects within her practice:
"The space in which a 'work of art inhabits, in blurring the boundary between the reality which is the made object and the reality within which it is placed.
I am looking for movement: movement of time, shifts of perception, expansion of possibilities, in transformation."
Riseborough states; "with respect to 'Mirror, Mirror...' positioned in the foyer, I am proposing two identical objects."

Solo show by Fine Art MA Student, Jeremy Cosmo Davies
"Over the past year I have become particularly interested in how an object evolves into a new narrative by giving new meaning to unnamed forms,
either produced by chance or through a formal presentation...
I love the materiality involved in the making process, in all its forms - the wood, steel, stone, paper and the elements."
Jeremy Cosmo Davies has a particular interest how an object evolves into a new narrative by giving new meaning to unnamed forms, either produced by chance or through a formal presentation.
musings: ranged across the artist's collection of different ‘off-cut’ experiences which gave new meaning and opened up new possibilities to the word 'off-cuts' – sculptures in oak and cor-ten steel; cyanotype photograms of ‘off-cut’ collages and the discarded newsprint used in theprinting process; and a site-specific video of areclaimed dry-stone
dyke.

"Warning: This Contains Nuts"
01.12.2011 Dark Sculpture Seminar Space (023), Squires Annexe
A performance piece from third year Fine Art student, Richard Hall.
"Break the shell/ Break the body/
Reveal the nut/ Reveal the mind/
Eat it/
Devour it/
Break it to pieces/
Lay down on the shards/
Lay down on the bones/"
'This performance reflects the pain and pleasure of breaking and eating the nut - Even when we do break through the shell and savour the nut for what is is, the now broken shell shards are scattered, causing tension.'
Richard's practice is concerned with psychology, social confluxes and sexuality. These ideas stem from a notion of continual situational perception relating to childhood experiences of isolation, communication and imagination.

"We can feel compelled to watch these very sudden and devastating occurrences. As much as we are drawn to scenes of violence, something that is
deeply horrifying can be equally beautiful"

14.11.2011 Sculpture Seminar Space, Squires Annexe
An Open Interactive Art Event by third year student Emma Pearson, to launch the Gallery Eep website...This occurred on the 14th November where the audience was invited to make a bid on the exhibitions on the website for their chance to win free art.
'The screen you are looking at now is art. Anyone wanting to own their own physical piece of it can make a bid, where you will be in with a chance of winning an art parcel. Anyone with online access and a computer can attend the gallery.
Making a website is really not so different from making a painting or sculpture in the ‘traditional’ or modern sense. These pages may show a glimmer of my world or maybe just a scramble of web surfing that we are all familiar with.'
The website is now officially open, where the electronic exhibition can be viewed online, from the comfort of your very own sofa... bid free online for
your chance to receive free art...Happy Bidding!
