Gallery North Project Space is looking for submissions from emerging artists to submit works for an exciting group exhibition to be held at an empty shop venue in Park View Shopping Centre, Whitley Bay. The space questions the typical gallery context of display and its size encourages artists to be ambitious.
We are seeking work in a variety of different mediums, including; painting, sculpture, print, photography, installation and video. We are also looking for an interactive piece for the exhibition preview. (Depending on the success of this first show we also plan to have this as a touring exhibition in other empty shop premises in other cities such as Leeds and Glasgow so it is continues to evolve beyond a specific locale)
Dates of exhibition: Saturday 30thJune – Thursday 21st July

Situated in a busy shopping centre with lots of footfall, it comprises of an empty shop with a large floor space, 2 large white walls and two sides of long glass windows which allows people to see in from the shopping centre and the street adjacent.
There is no brief or specification but artists must bare in mind that the audience will be allowed into the space at certain times but art works will be viewed predominantly from the outside (due to invigilation of the space). This is a great chance of working with a location in which the work can be experienced differently. (please see images below)
Please send:
- Your name
- a maximum of 3 different works/examples of proposals for works with 3-6 jpegs.
- Artist statement
- Brief outline of practice
All submissions can be sent to [email protected] no later than Friday 25th May 2012.
The final selection will be made by Northumbria graduates Kimberley Gaiger and Louise Winter. All selected artists will be notified via email by
Wednesday 6th June 2012.
We ask that all artists who are selected to include a £10 fee to go towards advertising and refreshments for the preview.
Install:
Artists are responsible for delivery of all pieces, including fixings; electrical equipment and tools needed for the install of works, to the premises by Monday 25th June at the latest (there may be the possibility of a van pick up from Northumbria University but this is not final).
Artists are also responsible for their works and we will not be responsible for loss or damage of works or equipment.
(Please Note: If you would like to show video works it would be best to present them on monitors due to the amount of light the space has.)

'Mirror, Mirror...' by Sarah Riseborough
Squires Foyer, Northumbria University
Site-specific installation
...Quietly waiting, often going un-noticed stands a site-specific installation, entitled 'Mirror, Mirror...' by MA Fine Art student, Sarah Riseborough.
Take a look, before it’s gone...you may not necessarily notice it’s there at first until you’re right on top of it.
Riseborough explores a range of different aspects within her practice:
"The space in which a 'work of art inhabits, in blurring the boundary between the reality which is the made object and the reality within which it is placed.
I am looking for movement: movement of time, shifts of perception, expansion of possibilities, in transformation."
Riseborough states; "with respect to 'Mirror, Mirror...' positioned in the foyer, I am proposing two identical objects."
